It was a new bookstore

At Church and Market

John owned the store

He'd written the computer code for the software 

Tracking inventory

John always looked like he needed a shampoo and a shave 

His cheesy sport coat was always covered in cigarette ashes-

He'd made his money playing poker-

During the Vietnam war he'd received a draft notice

And was told to report to the induction center-

He went and went through the entire process then 

They said you're in now get on the bus 

You're going to boot camp 

But here take everyone's papers

John left the building and turned left instead of right

On his way home he dumped all the papers 

In a garbage can

Six months later he got another notice 

To report to the induction center

But this time they asked him what he did for work

Oh yah know I do this and that 

No what do you do for money

He came clean

I play poker he told them

Bing bang 

Undesirable they stamped 

His papers and told him to hit the road

They didn't want him taking money off all 

The regular GI's
